Luce Boulnois
Born in France in 1931, Luce Boulnois studied Chinese and Russian at the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO) and at university in Paris. Her interest in the history of material and cultural exchange between East and West stemmed from research into Soviet and Chinese Central Asia at the height of the Cold War. The result was a first book on the Silk Road, published in 1963. It has since been re-edited and translated into nine languages, including Chinese and Japanese.
Boulnois worked for almost 30 years at the National Center of Scientific Research (CNRS), part of a research team in the field of Nepalese and Himalayan studies. She continued studying the history of trade relations and cultural exchange, producing various publications on TransHimalyan trade, Sino-Nepalese relations, and the Silk Road, and after retiring in 1992, devoted her time to writing The Silk Road-Monks, Warriors and Merchants. Her historical research of Central Asia and Tibet continues.
